EURAXESS Africa had a strong and visible presence at GITEX Africa 2025, held in Marrakech from 14–16 April, showcasing its commitment to enhancing research and innovation collaboration between Africa and Europe. Represented by Dr Ahmed Maalel at the EIC Pavilion, EURAXESS Africa joined forces with key EU-funded initiatives like SEADE and AEIP. A highlight of the event was the 4th Workshop on the Implementation of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda, focusing on Artificial Intelligence as a tool to strengthen R&I collaboration. Organised by the AU-EU Innovation Agenda Working Group, in partnership with the European Innovation Council and GITEX Africa, the workshop featured key figures including Nienke Buisman and Dr Vincenzo Lorusso, and showcased testimonials from startups and innovators across both continents. The event offered valuable opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, and strategic engagement — reinforcing EURAXESS Africa’s pivotal role in bridging Euro-African innovation ecosystems.

This first-year Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Report assesses the implementation of the AU–EU Innovation Agenda (2023– 2033), adopted in July 2023 following the AU-EU Ministerial on Science, Technology and Innovation. The Agenda promotes translating Research and Innovation (R&I) into real-world impact, products, services, businesses, and jobs, across Africa and Europe. The report tracks key indicators aligned with its four objectives: 1) Make it real, 2) Generate impact by design, 3) Strengthen people, communities, and institutions, and 4) Learn, monitor, and scale. It draws on both primary (surveys and interviews) and secondary data, offering baseline insights ahead of ongoing annual assessments.

The EURAXESS Worldwide Training took place in Brussels from April 8–10, 2025, focusing on EU research and innovation policy updates and global engagement. High-level speakers from DG RTD shared insights on science diplomacy, research security, AI in science, and upcoming EU programmes. The nine global EURAXESS hubs presented their 2024 achievements and 2025 objectives. The event also featured thematic sessions on EURAXESS operations, ERC, and MSCA, and concluded with practical workshops on strategy, communication tools, and best practices.

The EU and Egypt have concluded negotiations for Egypt’s association to Horizon Europe, enabling Egyptian entities to fully participate in EU research and innovation projects from 2025 onwards. The agreement, expected to be signed by November 2025, marks Egypt as the second African country to be fully associated after Tunisia. This partnership will advance cooperation in key areas like energy, food security, and digital transition, building on long-standing EU–Egypt collaboration and strategic ties.

A productive meeting between the DG RTD Team Europe-Africa and EURAXESS Africa was held in Brussels to strengthen collaboration in science, technology, and innovation. The discussion focused on supporting Africa Initiative III and Mediterranean Initiative II under Horizon Europe through joint actions and events. Both sides committed to aligning strategies to enhance Europe–Africa cooperation and expand opportunities for African researchers.
