Description of the center: FCADIZ is a private non-profit organization which aims to stimulate, develop and harmoniously integrate basic, clinical and public health research, and to potentiate transnational research to encourage better sharing of the scientific advances in the areas of the prevention and treatment of the most common health problems. The Foundation manages the activity of the Cadiz Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation, hereafter referred to as INiBICA. INiBICA offers coverage for every healthcare area in the province of Cadiz, with a population of more than 1.2 million people who are potential beneficiaries of the activities carried out by the Institute. INiBICA principally consists of the University Hospital Puerta del Mar (Cadiz) and the University of Cadiz, which form its basic nucleus, together with the group of Public Health Centres of the province of Cadiz. In total, it manages more than 780 researchers and an annual budget of some three million euros, a figure which increases yearly.

Description of the group: The Biomedical Innovation in Osteoarticular Surgery group (EM12) arises from the interest in maintaining collaboration between healthcare professionals and from other areas of knowledge in the field of osteoarticular surgery, especially in the fields of engineering and computer technologies.

The preferred work areas are additive manufacturing (3D printing) applied to osteoarticular surgery, organizational innovation in the health field and research on results in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology.

Description of the project/projects:

• Project 1 Objective: Evaluation of the role of the bioengineer in the design and prototyping of specific medical implants (PSI) as part of a point of care custom-made medical device manufacturing center in a public hospital of the national health network

• Project 2 Objective: Optimization of the innovative tasks of the bioengineer as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team in a national public hospital

Description Principal Investigator

Dr. Andrés-Cano has a degree in Medicine from the University of Cádiz in 2009, a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Malaga in 2016 with the doctoral thesis “Digital preoperative planning in total hip arthroplasty. Clinical evaluation of the calibration by means of double marker ” qualified with Outstanding Cum Laude. Official University Master from the University of Malaga in "New Advancements in Diagnosis, Therapy and Biomedical Research". University Expert by the UNED in Statistics Applied to Health Sciences and University Expert by the UNED in Management Clinic. He holds the title Fellow of the European Board of Orthopedics and Traumatology (FEBOT). Accreditation of competences as Traumatologist in advanced degree by the ACSA

Dr. Andrés-Cano was awarded the final residency award from the Spanish Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology "Access to the Best Resident Intern Doctor of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Year Award." He obtained a scholarship from the Andalusian Society of Traumatology and Orthopedics for training stays in foreign centers. During his residency, he made a stay as a Clinical Observer at the Hospital for Special Surgery (New York, USA) and at the Rothman Orthopedic Institute of the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (Philadelphia, USA).

He is currently working as a specialist doctor of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at the Puerta del Mar University Hospital. Develops the coordination work of the 3D Printing group in Multicenter Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology "Trauma3D" (www.trauma3d.com). Tutor of clinical practices of the Degree in Medicine of the University of Seville and Cádiz and tutor of curricular practices of the Degree in Biomedical Engineering of the University of Seville.
