Offer Description

Job Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applicants for one or more positions in Computer Science on assistant professor and/or associate professor levels with a focus on Data Science and Advanced Machine Learning. The expected starting date is mid 2024, with room for flexibility.

The department's current research in data science covers a wide range of areas and topics that include machine learning, optimization, visualization, data mining, bioinformatics, and explainable AI. We are involved in a range of basic and applied research projects and collaborations with public and private institutions, both nationally and internationally. Applications include biomedical and health areas, humanities, and social sciences, among others. We are looking for new colleagues who can strengthen or add to our competences in these or other directions, and who can contribute to the department's strategic development in data science, artificial intelligence, and related topics. We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in candidates with competence in advanced machine learning (including topics such as NLP, deep learning, and computer vision).

Who we are looking for
An ideal candidate:
• holds a PhD degree in computer science or equivalent
• has a research track record at a high international level
• can teach and advise in computer science, artificial intelligence, and data science at all levels.

For a hiring at the level of associate professor, applicants are expected to have demonstrated the ability to direct independent research projects and obtain external funding. An appointment as an assistant professor lasts for three years, after which a permanent position on associate professorship level is expected to be opened, for which the assistant professor can apply.

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Danish is not a requirement: more English than Danish is used when teaching in computer science, and more than half of the research staff members in computer science have international backgrounds. Successful applicants will be offered Danish courses by the university.

Applications from promising early-career talents are highly encouraged. For more information about recruitment and career advancement criteria, please see the policy for recruitment and career advancement at the Faculty of Science.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is an inclusive and international working environment with state-of-the-art facilities and strong traditions for collaboration across sections, departments, and faculties, and with other educational institutions, municipalities, and industries. The degrees offered by the department include BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in computer science, a BSc degree in artificial intelligence, and an MSc degree in data science. For more information, we encourage interested candidates to explore the website of the department and the section (see above), or to reach out to Professor Arthur Zimek (zimek@imada.sdu.dk).

Application, salary etc.
Appointment to the position will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. When the expert committee issues its assessment, the applicants will be sent the portion of the assessment pertaining to them personally.

The application must include:
• A curriculum vitae
• A full list of publications
• Copies of all publications on which the applicant wishes to be evaluated
• A brief survey of the applicant's most important research results and research plans for the next three years
• A teaching portfolio (not applicable for assistant professors).

Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

An interview may be included as a part of the overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the below link. You should upload two files: A motivated application as well as a CV including other documents for assessment. All documents must be in Adobe pdf-format.

Since not all members of the appointment committee are Danish-speaking, it is recommended that your application is submitted in English.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
