Offer Description
The research group of Dr. Asen Daskalov at ImmunoConcept (UMR 5164, National Center for Scientific Research, CNRS, Bordeaux, France) offers an ATIP-funded postdoctoral position to a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with interests and experience in fungal biology and genetics.
- The laboratory
The laboratory is interested in the emerging concept of the fungal immune system and the study of regulated cell death in the context of comparative immunology.
We aim at characterizing the molecular mechanisms of regulated cell death (RCD) in filamentous fungi. We explore the diverse and widespread family of fungal NOD-like receptors (NLRs). This superfamily of trans-kingdom intracellular immune receptors plays key roles in immunity throughout the tree of life. We strive to characterize these roles in fungi and decipher the NLR-dependent signaling pathways.
In addition, we have recently discovered and characterized fungal gasdermin proteins (fGSDMs). Gasdermins are a family of pore-forming proteins with diverse important roles in mammalian immunity. fGSDMs also control cell death in fungi and are regulated by a family of multi-domain proteases, representing molecular sensors. Some of these multi-domain protease-carrying sensors are NLR proteins. These findings have established multiple evolutionary parallels with pyroptotic pathways (highly inflammatory cell death) in animals.
We investigate the molecular bases of fungal cell death using a variety of approaches including genetics, genomics, structural biology and bioinformatics. Preferred model organisms of the laboratory are Neurospora crassa and Podospora anserina but would also welcome candidates that have experience with other filamentous fungal (or plant) species and molecular biologists.
- Research Projects
The research project is at the intersection of NLRs and fGSDMs, with main objective to further characterize the molecular mechanisms of fungal pyroptotic-like cell death. There are however several other research projects in the lab, towards which the candidate could decide to contribute.
- The Candidate
The ideal candidate is curiosity-driven, passionate and values teamwork.
Experience with filamentous fungi is highly recommended. Molecular biology experience and English proficiency expected.
Applicants aiming to take the initiative and explore personal ideas, related to the laboratory research topics, would be highly appreciated and encouraged.
- The conditions
The position is funded for 2 years (+1-year extension possibility) with a competitive remuneration. The laboratory is situated in a new building with state-of-the -art facilities, not far from Bordeaux city center. The city is an important economic center with rich history and dynamic cultural life.
